Acupuncture is a popular method in East Gwillimbury that is known to be helpful in balancing energy flow or qi and chi (CHEE) (a term for life force). These are believed to be flowing via pathways or meridians in the body. The principle that is followed is that needles are put into particular points in the body along the meridians. This method will then re-balance energy flow in the body.
Acupuncture has been proven as an effective treatment for conditions such as:
- Musculoskeletal
- Neurological
- Circulatory disorders
- Gastrointestinal disorders
- Immune disorders
- Psychological disorders
- Respiratory disorders
- Addictions
- Chemotherapy
- Dermatological
- Weight control
The practitioner will do a physical examination, which will involve taking your pulse to monitor blood flow, as well as check your stress levels and hydration. The practitioner will do an assessment of your health condition, medical history and your symptoms. They will then look at your tongue as it’s a symbol of the whole body. You will then sit or lie down, depending on where the needles will be inserted. The acupuncturist will stimulate accurate points along the skin of the body using ultra-thin needles to release stress and decrease pain. You may experience a sense of relaxation during your treatment or minimal discomfort due to feelings of heat, aching or heaviness around where the needle was inserted.
Depending on the condition, the acupuncturist may want to do up to 12 sessions in your treatment plan. But that depends if your condition is acute or chronic. People with acute pain may only need 1 or treatments, where as people with more of a chronic may need more.
The acupuncturist may involve some other techniques, such as cupping and tuina massage.
Cupping uses sterile glass cups and heat to create a vacuum. The vacuum is formed to pull blood to the area to release muscle tension. The cups can also be used with oil to slide over the back and muscles. Cupping may leave marks that look like bruises for a few days.
Tuina (pronounced ‘twee-nah’) is a form of Chinese therapeutic massage. ‘Tui’ means to push and ‘Na’ is to grasp. It is a combination of rhythmic manipulation and pressure of the soft tissue along the meridians of the body and at exact acupuncture points. Tuina can progress blood circulation, increase range of motion and is active in nerve regulation. This type of massage is effective in the treatment of muscles, tendons and ligaments.
After your treatment, the patient may have some side effects, such as: fatigue, soreness, light-headedness or emotional release. The symptoms and pain may become more severe which is called “the rebound effect.”
